INFORMATION
Why Kennolyn's Day Camp?

Property and Location

Kennolyn Camp is situated on 300 acres of private property in Soquel, California. Redwood trees dominate the entire property and provide an awe-inspiring backdrop for camp adventures. The property is secluded at the end of a four mile dead end road and borders Nisene Marks State Park, a 10,000 acre barrier against encroachment and development. And yet, for all this seclusion, we are not isolated. Depending on the session, our buses travel to camp each day from Los Gatos, Monterey, Watsonville, Corralitos, Castroville, Aptos, Capitola, Scotts Valley, and Santa Cruz. Each journey is comfortably completed in an hour or less. Our Day Camp is not run on a school campus or in a park setting with limited facilities. When you become a part of the Kennolyn family, your campers will notice the difference and so will you.

There are two adjoining properties that make up Kennolyn Camps. Day Camp is located on our Hilltop Hacienda property with its wonderful vistas and facilities. Resident Camp is held at our StoneCreek Village property and is designed to represent an old western town complete with Lumber Company, Train Depot, Mayor's Office, and Lodge. Our facilities are top quality and, because our winter weather is so temperate, our office is located on our property all year long.

Tradition

Since 1946, campers have grown up with the traditions that are important to a Kennolyn camp experience. From Flag Raising Circle in the mornings to Closing Circle in the afternoon, from the "Wishy Washy Washer Woman Dance Off" to the friendly competition of the Bus Cheer contest, the daily traditions help build the camp experience.

We live in a fast paced world and although kids today love the pace and energy of modern life, it is inspiring to see them embrace traditions that have a 63 year history. Your camper will come home singing songs that you sang when you were a kid. For once, you can be cool because you know the words to Old Mother Leary instead of the newest classic from 50 Cent! Watch your campers wear their Kennolyn Green shirts with real pride. One of the strongest traditions that helps our campers and their families all year round is our insistence that behavior be "K-rated." K-rated means that words and actions fit within our code of conduct. It's hard to describe exactly but campers will learn to respect and respond to this fun way of enforcing community guidelines. We pride ourselves on being traditional but not grossly old fashioned. We attend conferences and educational events every year to learn about cutting edge programming ideas and we constantly listen to our campers as they tell us what's cool and what's not. We don't take it all on board but we find compromises where modern cultural norms can blend with our time honored and much loved traditions. back to top

Exciting Activities

As any parent knows, it takes a lot for a child to turn off the TV or computer and go outside and play. And yet, campers return here year after year knowing that screen time will be replaced with face to face time. No need to log on and check messages from your online friends when your real friends are right here at camp . There is no doubt, it takes outstanding programs and activities to satisfy children of the 21st century. We set ourselves apart from other camps by the depth and quality of our activity program. Come and see our magnificent ropes courses, the beautiful pool, the historical Equestrian Center, and so much more. From the traditional to the innovative our activities are fun, exciting, and offer social and skill development. We have a number of activities that you just don't see at any other day camp in the area including fencing and trapeze and Horseback Riding remains one of our most popular options. A full list of our activities appears in the Activities Section of the website. back to top

ACA Accredited and Diamond Certified

Kennolyn has long been committed to offering the very best camp experience for our campers. The best known and most widely recognized benchmark of high standards for summer camps is American Camp Association (ACA) Accreditation. To earn ACA Accreditation we undergo a thorough (up to 300 standards) review of our operation — from staff qualifications and training to emergency management. The American Camp Association collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth-serving agencies to assure that our current practices reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp operation. Kennolyn Camps and ACA form a partnership that promotes growth and fun in an environment committed to safety. Kennolyn Camps is the only privately owned, ACA Accredited day camp in Santa Cruz.

In addition, Kennolyn Camps is also the first camp in the world, to earn the prestigious Diamond Certified Award. Click here to go to Diamond Certified to learn more about this award which signifies that Kennolyn is independently rated highest in quality. back to top

Commitment and Community

Many people who come to Kennolyn, whether as campers, parents, or staff, develop a sense of pride and commitment that stays with them long after the summer is over. Our staff return year after year to continue to impact our campers. Our continued number one source of new campers is referrals from satisfied families that want to share their commitment to Kennolyn's program and ideals. We live and work in the Santa Cruz community and we are involved in many programs that help local schools. Our Kennolyn Club program offers a rebate to local schools and in 2007 $4724 was donated back to participating schools as well as $4500 in camp sessions donated for additional fund raising. We host 2 fund raising events each year offering local schools the opportunity to use our facility to build community and raise money. We are very active as sponsors and participants in local youth sports. In 2007, we came up with an innovative way to help Capitola Soquel Little League. Our staff ran the snack shack and helped keep costs down and maximize the profit for the league. At the end of baseball season we host team parties and show local kids that their involvement in youth sports activities is important to us. We build community every day at camp and we support our local community every day of the year. back to top
